In this now well-established bi-annual event, we decipher together fall-winter trends that caught our attention during the four main Fashion Weeks in New York, London, Milan and Paris last February , to adopt to be at the forefront of fashion this season!

As summer fades, the nuances of fall-winter take center stage. For the fall-winter 2023-2024 season, fashion is slowly moving away from the madness of the 2000s, embracing a refined and sophisticated style. Inspired by the aesthetic of “Quiet Luxury”, the designers offer a distinguished wardrobe highlighting revisited classics. This is how we see the emergence of knotted collars, ballerinas with straps, XXL shoulders and touches reminiscent of the 1950s. However, a few bold elements stand out, like the leather jacket and tartan patterns. Deciphering the the biggest fashion trends for fall/winter 2023 that will mark the cool months until spring returns.

The key Styles for fall-winter 2023-2024

–XXL Shoulders

A recurring trend for several years, structured and protruding shoulders adorn many jackets, blazers and even perfectos, inspired by the power dressing imagined by Giorgio Armani in the 70s and 80s. Symbols of the powerful and conquering business woman, we regularly find them at Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs, Versace or Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood.

–Workwear

Workwear (or officewear) means office wear. In the vein of empowerment, it borrows pieces from the men’s wardrobe for a classic and sober look in a coordinated suit (jacket + skirt, jacket + pants) or three-piece suit, without forgetting the essential tie. The novelty lies in the choice of finishes, cuts and materials to bring sensuality by revisiting the codes: low waist, slit skirt, dizzying neckline.

Faithful to its androgynous style, Saint Laurent combines square-shouldered, manly blazers with ultra-feminine slit skirts. Miu Miu offers knit skirt suits, while Rokh introduces leather bustier and visible lingerie for a sexy working girl look. To be found at Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Dries Von Noten, Stella McCartney or Prada.

–Maximalism

As opposed to minimalism which advocates purity and monochrome, the maximalist wants to be extravagant, joyful and unbridled: room for a mix of prints (checks with stripes, polka dots with flowers), a mix of styles, multi-colored pieces, accumulation and superposition. Although the trend is not new, it has emerged since the period of uncertainty and even anxiety linked to Covid, as a need for comfort and optimism!

As seen at Gucci (the master of mix and match), Etro (with its folk and colorful outfits), Burberry (and its Scottish debauchery), Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, Ulla Johnson and even Moschino. Even the classic Chanel house lends itself to the game by combining polka dots and lace, houndstooth knit with floral knit! Do you dare to adopt this antidote trend to gloom?

– 50s style

After the 60s and 70s, a notable return to a decade that sublimated women. The 50s style revisited for 2023 is inspired by the “New Look” silhouette created by Christian Dior in 1947: fitted jacket, defined waist, voluminous petticoat. To be found at Dior of course (which for the occasion is reissuing the heel created by Roger Vivier), Balmain, Versace and Bottega Venetta.

Femininity and glamor are evoked with the blouse + pencil skirt combo, cocktail dresses, strapless dresses, fitted corsets, swing skirts, midi or knee-length skirt suits, peplum jackets, retro floral prints, noble materials (taffeta, satin, chintz, flannel).

–The skirt over pants

The Y2K revival has punctuated the fashion shows for several seasons. With designers having fun revisiting the codes of the 90s and 2000s (crop top, total denim look, cargo pants, etc.). In the vein of layering dear to the decade, all that was missing was the pants under the skirt, and this was done by Fendi, Givenchy, Chanel and Courrèges present it in various ways: short and pleated in a kilt style, long and slit , asymmetrical, mesh, tweed, etc…

–Baggy jeans

Jeans continue to evolve. After flirting with slit cuts and cargo-style details, it returns to a loose design inspired by the 1990s and 2000s. Its relaxed fit, synonymous with comfort, is balanced with elegant touches, like a bow blouse and ballerinas.

–The little black dress revisited

This wardrobe classic is also deqerving of its own twist. Black allows for boldness in terms of materials and graphic cutouts. At Loewe, the dress is suspended, barely highlighting the body, and the strapless neckline plays with unusual shapes. Same with Alexander McQueen.

–The vest/cardigan

The vest wave, already in vogue last season, continues to gain ground. Whether twisted, cropped, with puffed sleeves or adorned with decorative buttons, it will become a winter wardrobe essential for various body shapes and styles.

–The leather blazer

Timeless, the leather blazer remains a reliable ally for adding a bold nuance to our everyday outfits. Miu Miu recently presented a model with an aged appearance, reminiscent of vintage charm, thus foreshadowing the trends of the months to come.

–The trench coat

It’s a basic that comes back every mid-season. And if we love it so much, it’s because it knows how to reinvent itself endlessly. Act N° 1 makes it a strapless dress, Alexander McQueen gives it a theatrical presence, while Rokh breaks it down into a top and petticoat ensemble.

–The tartan

Classic and versatile, tartan lends itself to many styles: glam-rock, preppy, punk, grunge, etc. A favorite motif of English designer Vivienne Westwood, it served as a common thread for the various collections of the fall-winter season. We find it at Andreas Kronthaler (artistic director of the Vivienne Westwood house since the death of his wife in December 2022), Burberry, Saint Laurent, Etro, Christian Dior, Stella McCartney and Thom Browne.

This multicolored checked wool fabric is typical of Celtic peoples and associated with Scottish clans since the 18th century, identifiable thanks to the designs and colors used. The tartan print can be worn as a total look by combining checks of different sizes, and on all the pieces of the wardrobe (jacket, skirt, pants, dress, blouse, sweater). For the less daring, it will be ideal as an accessory to brighten up a sober gray or black look (scarf, bag or socks).

–The postcard print

Designers are renewing their prints, but in an Ifolor style this season. Between surreal landscapes stamped on a Rabanne dress, rural scenes printed on a Coperni jacket and equestrian figures affixed to Stella McCartney silhouettes, the trend is dreamlike.

– polka dots

A nice surprise for the winter season, we love its retro spirit which evokes Dolce Vita or timeless French chic. To discover in satin version on transparent pieces at Nina Ricci and Miu Miu. In all sizes and colors at Marni. In total look at Benetton, available in the form of pearly pearls and rhinestone cabochons at Balmain, micro polka dot version at Philosophy Di Lorenzo or giant pastilles at Valentino.

Renowned for its houndstooth and checks, Chanel diverts the house’s emblematic white camellia to affix it to pieces of black tweed: seen from a distance, the relief effect is deceptive, offering an original and fun to divert the polka dot pattern!

-Silky feathers

There is, in the delicacy of the feather, a magic that goes beyond simple clothing. Its finesse and fragility make it pieces that are not necessarily cut out for everyday life. Even if daring attempts, like Loewe’s fully feathered pants and top, go further than simple adornment, the challenge remains difficult. It will never be trivial to wear feathers and without it remaining very theatrical.

-Tiny hairs put on a show

It must be the cold that makes you want to bundle up in something soft, both at home and outside. Big, soft coats are nothing new, but they continue to be popular. We love the 80s style Gucci models in tangy colors and the spotted Stella McCartney looks like Cruella D’Enfer.

–3D flowers

Traditionally reserved for the warm seasons, this year, floral designs are finding a place in the fall wardrobe. They can be seen affixed in three dimensions or simply embroidered on our clothes, giving them a poetic and romantic finish. Floral silhouettes have been highlighted on pieces like Burberry coats and Richard Quinn and Chanel dresses.

–Elegant lace

This season, transparency is elegant, all in lace, but almost just in black! Under a jacket at the office and completely confident in the evening.

A symbol of absolute romanticism, winter lace takes a more sensual turn by playing the transparency card. The material leaves its function of underwear and turns into a dress at Off-White, Gucci and Bally. Shirt, skirts and shorts, for the house of Dolce & Gabbana, lace is applied to all clothing, even coats.

–Head-to-toe denim

Denim is timeless and unforgottable in this cold season. For a monochrome look, fans of simplicity will choose uniform shades, while daring people will mix tones. Whether in overalls or in a jeans and denim shirt combination, the look will be undeniable.

–Leather as a second skin

A noble and sensual material, leather gives clothes an unparalleled sophistication. However, in the interest of ethics and sustainability, some brands are turning to plant-based alternatives. Oversized coats are safe bets, for example at Tod’s or Sportmax. At the latter, the arrival of draped dresses gives this piece a new dimension.
