London-based personal trainer David Higgins has worked with Margot Robbie since around 2015, when she was preparing for her role in “The Legend of Tarzan.” The aesthetic of this film โ€“ disheveled, grunge, raw โ€“ is almost the polar opposite of his current star role in โ€œBarbieโ€.

Nonetheless, to prepare for the perfectly pink and manicured role of Barbie, Robbie returned to Higgins, this time asking him to not only train her, but also to train the entire cast โ€“ the Barbies and the Kens. (In case you’re curious, it was recommended by none other than Samuel L. Jackson).

What followed was as wholesome as possible: the whole crew would show up to train with Higgins during summer filming in London, and it became like a community, as Higgins told POPSUGAR. He said it was a really collaborative and fun experience that even director Greta Gerwig and other producers were involved.

If you had to guess the type of workout that makes up the โ€œBarbieโ€ method, you might sayโ€ฆ step aerobics? And it’s not that far off, since Gerwig herself is a certified step aerobics instructor. But the reality is even more obvious, since it is the most popular workout currently: Pilates.

Higgins, who is also a physical therapist, has been combining Pilates with traditional strength and conditioning training for around 20 years โ€“ a surprisingly unlikely duo in the fitness world. As a physiotherapist, he approached exercise from a rehabilitation perspective, and then realized that he really enjoyed the majority of aspects of Pilates, namely the control, the engagement and the โ€œcorrect alignment,โ€ as he explained. But instead of going all-in on Pilates, Higgins thought, why not learn to do it all? And itโ€™s possible, because the body responds very well to diversity.!

This hybrid approach forms the basis of the Barbie Method โ€“ a name he did not personally give to the training style, but which seems appropriate when referring to training the actors in the film โ€“ and it appears that This is a great method for everyone, whether it’s a plastic life or another. In an interview with Fandango, Simu Liu (who plays Ken) joked that the Barbies got a sleepover to encourage bonding between the cast, while the Kens got daily workouts. โ€“ and it does, but to be fair, so do Barbies. They just looked a little different.

Higging said that the Kens followed a more strength-focused program, while the Barbies focused on Pilates, with strength and conditioning.

Typically, the Barbies did four days of Pilates and two days of strength and conditioning a week, while the Kens did the opposite: four days of strength training and two days of Pilates, he added. Recovery-wise, they used physiotherapy and treatment throughout filming. In total, the actors trained with Higgins for around thirty weeks.

Higgins firmly believes in measuring the success of a training program with questions such as: โ€œHow do you feel?โ€ What satisfies you? What do you want to improve? And, either way, it translates into results,โ€ he said. But he also likes traditional bodybuilding work for its easily quantifiable nature, which makes it easy to track progress. You can say, This is where you started and this is where you are.

The strength and conditioning sessions he did with the Barbie troupe followed a circuit-style format, that is, a selection of several successive exercises targeting different muscles, which you repeat several times. He said his training sessions with Barbie looked something like this:

  • Push or press exercise (e.g. dumbbell bench press) โ€“ 15 reps
  • Back exercise or pull-up (side pull or arm curl) โ€“ 15 repetitions
  • Shoulder exercise (shoulder press or lateral raise) โ€“ 15 reps
  • Biceps exercise (curl) โ€“ 15 repetitions
  • Lower body exercise (squat or lunge) โ€“ 15 reps
  • Triceps exercise (triceps curl or skull crush) โ€“ 15 reps
  • Abdominal exercises (plank) โ€“ 2 minutes
  • Repeat the exercise 4 to 5 times.
