Play sports

It’s well known that sport is a natural antidepressant! Practicing regular physical activity is therefore a good technique to effectively combat seasonal depression. Indeed, playing sports allows the body to secrete various neurotransmitters and hormones, such as serotonin, dopamine or even endorphin, which will help you feel better.

Additionally, when you suffer from seasonal depression, the temptation to stay in bed and do nothing can sometimes be great. It is therefore important not to let yourself get discouraged and to stay active.

Stock up on vitamins and nutrients

In winter, you should not eat more, but better! To stay in shape, it is important to provide all the nutrients, vitamins, fatty acids and trace elements necessary for the proper functioning of the body and the immune system. To combat seasonal depression, make sure to consume:

  • Magnesium: essential to combat fatigue and stress. Magnesium also helps ensure the body’s nervous balance. You can find it in certain fresh fruits (banana, kiwi, etc.) or dried fruits (apricots, grapes, figs, etc.), oilseeds (almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, etc.), dark chocolate, whole grains, etc.
  • Omega 3: these essential fatty acids for the body play an important role in regulating mood and are also very good for the heart. You can find them in oils (walnuts, rapeseed, etc.), fatty fish (sardines, herring, mackerel, etc.) and seeds (squash, flax, etc.).
  • Vitamin D: as the sun becomes rarer during this period, it may be interesting to make up for the lack of vitamin D. In fact, with a sufficient intake of vitamin D, you will be able to resist infections more easily and will feel less tired. . You will find it in fatty fish (mackerel, salmon, sardines, etc.).
  • Vitamin C: queen of vitamins. Vitamin C, when present in sufficient quantity, increases immune capacity and fights against winter infections. You find it in all citrus fruits, kiwis, exotic fruits as well as in red fruits in summer.

Go in search of light!

Very often, one of the first reasons for seasonal depression is lack of light. To be able to combat it, it is therefore advisable to get plenty of sun and light. So, as soon as the weather is nice, don’t hesitate to go outside and expose yourself to the sun’s rays. At home, keep in mind that natural light is always more beneficial than artificial light. So open your curtains wide and clear the openings in your home or office. To brighten up your winter daily life even more, you can also place mirrors in strategic places, such as in front of a window. They will reflect outdoor light throughout your room.

Finally, listen to your body, watch your bad habits, take care of your meals, exercise, slow down the use of screens and above all, don’t dare to seek the advice of a professional if you are not feeling well!
