Adopt A Slow Cosmetic Routine
Today, we use the term slow in every way: slow consumption, slow life, slow cosmetics… So, what is it exactly? Slow means to slow down. It is therefore a movement where we consciously choose to slow down. But then, how can we apply this practice to our cosmetics? Let’s learn how to adopt a slow cosmetic routine!
Adopt a slow cosmetic routine!
Applying the slow movement to your cosmetics means buying little but better, or slowing down not only your consumption of cosmetics but also their use.
It’s not only buying less cosmetics, but also using less on your skin. Furthermore, it favors cosmetics with few ingredients and active principles in their formulas. Finally, it means favoring organic cosmetics with less negative impact on the skin and on the Planet.
–The slow cosmetic
The Slow Cosmétique association rewards each year the best product formulations and the best marketing model. Their charter, based on more than 80 criteria, is based on 4 main pillars, for more cosmetics:
- Ecological: no pollution, no chemistry, no plastic. Local, minimally processed products
- Healthy: respect for living things and the precautionary principle.,
- Intelligent: products that meet the skin’s real needs.
- Reasonable: no greenwashing, realistic promises, an ethical and fair price.
–Slow cosmetics & DIY cosmetics
DIY cosmetics, also called home made cosmetics are “recipes” to do yourself, but which are not necessarily slow. Initially, more than 20 years ago, the supply and demand for making your own cosmetics was very low, you had no other choice but to make slow cosmetics.
Today, this has evolved and you can easily find a plethora of raw materials, active ingredients, emulsifiers, etc. Allowing you to create cosmetics with an INCI list as long as your arm and having nothing slow about it. So, we don’t rush headlong into thinking that if it’s a DIY, it’s necessarily slow!
Organic cosmetics, for their part, often have a shorter INCI list than conventional cosmetics. However, if you buy it and apply it in large quantities to your skin… You will not be in a slow process either.
Some ideas for adopting a slow cosmetic approach
We first slow down on our routines by targeting the minimum: clean, hydrate, nourish.
Then, we slow down on our products: most of our cosmetics are emulsions: day cream, night cream, body lotion and cream, conditioner… And what is an emulsion? A mixture of oil, water and emulsifiers to stabilize everything. We therefore replace all these emulsions with “slow”:
–Pamper your body with vegetable oil
Moisturize, the basis of the base in your beauty routine even in a slow cosmetic routine. For body milk (or cream), nothing could be simpler: with the skin still wet after the shower, apply a vegetable oil. The emulsion will be created instantly on your skin.
- If your skin is normal, choose a vegetable oil such as Sesame oil, Macadamia oil, etc.
- If your skin is dry, opt for sweet almond oil or avocado oil, for example.
- Furthermore, if you want a pleasant scent, choose coconut oil, Monoï, plum almond oil, etc.
–Offer gentle care to your face
For the face, to replace the day and/or night cream, you can proceed in the same way. So, spray your face with floral water, which you will use here not only to moisten the skin but also for its active ingredients. Then, apply a vegetable oil (be careful, a few drops are enough!).
–Gently cleanse and remove makeup from your face
To adopt a slower skin cleanser, consider cold process soap. There are some for all skin types, with or without perfume. It lasts a long time and does not make waste, it can be used on the face and body of the whole family.
Finally, to replace your makeup remover, use a rather thick vegetable oil, sweet almond oil for example (and even why not olive oil from your kitchen!) to massage your face and dissolve your makeup. Then, wash your skin with your soap: you are now makeup free!
You are now ready to slow dance in your bathroom, uh…. To put some slow music in your bathroom!
So, should you adopt this approach? One thing is sure, whatever you do, as long as you are happy, you will be perfect!
