Are your products not working as they should? Do you have preconceived ideas about certain active ingredients? Have you considered the fact that you may not be using them correctly? Here are our tips for getting the most out of your products.
–Don’t focus your routine on a single problem
Base your routine on a problem: Dehydration, acne, spots, sensitivity, etc. Target your biggest concern and use the right ingredients to correct it for at least 2 cell renewals (about 2 months). Setting one goal at a time will help you build a coherent routine. Once you have resolved this problem, you can gradually introduce other ingredients. This will allow you to check if the products are working as they should.
–Don’t let your cleansers sit
Leave your cleanser on for a few minutes to give the active ingredients time to penetrate deep into the pores. This helps to dislodge impurities, excess sebum and dead cells more effectively. You can leave it on by massaging it for 1 to 2 minutes or leave it on for 10 minutes like a mask because they are so rich in active ingredients that it is a shame to rinse so quickly! Cleansers should be applied to dry skin to allow the active ingredients to not be diluted in water. This allows for better use of the active ingredients.
–Over-exfoliate your skin
Exfoliation allows you to renew your skin by removing dead skin, thus stimulating cell renewal. Over-exfoliating your skin could damage your skin barrier and create inflammation that can lead to redness, dryness or the appearance of blemishes.
Don’t forget to listen to your skin, understand it and skip exfoliation if you feel your skin is weakened even if it’s a day when you had planned an exfoliation. I recommend exfoliating your skin 2 times a week maximum. The same goes for retinol.
Retinol is one of the most effective active ingredients. However, you have to know how to use it intelligently. Start slowly but surely. Apply 2 to 3 times a week to start. You can gradually increase the applications over time as the skin gets used to this powerful active ingredient.
Taking a break 1 to 2 days a week allows the skin to take a break and regenerate.
–Rinse the skin with cold water
Cold water helps tighten the pores. If you apply cold water before your cleansing, impurities will be trapped in the pores and create imperfections. It is recommended to rinse your face with warm water to allow the cleanser to penetrate the pores to clean them deeply. The very last rinse can be done with cold water to tighten the pores.
–Do only one collagen cure
Collagen is an important structural protein for maintaining plump, youthful and hydrated skin. To maintain constant levels of collagen in your skin and in your body, it is necessary to supplement every day. Cures only provide temporary benefits because collagen is destroyed every day by oxidative stress, UV rays, etc.
Its effects are also cumulative, so the more you take it regularly, the more you will reap the benefits in the long term. Collagen supplementation should be adapted according to your age and needs. Taking an amount lower than your needs will not have significant effects on the quality of your skin.
–Not using sunscreen
Daily application of sunscreen is the best way to prevent premature skin aging including wrinkles, age spots and loss of elasticity. It is therefore useless to invest in anti-aging care if you do not protect your skin. UVA rays responsible for the destruction of collagen can penetrate through clouds, windows… You are therefore never safe from the sun even if you spend little time outdoors. Cumulative exposure to the sun can lead to long-term damage.
–Thinking that vitamin C is photosensitizing
Contrary to popular belief, vitamin C does not make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Quite the opposite! Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from oxidative stress and free radicals. It therefore protects against skin aging. This does not mean that you should not apply SPF every day as you may have read above. Vitamin C + SPF is an excellent combo to apply every morning.
–Applying oil to dry skin
Whether on the face or body, you should always apply oil to damp skin because water (or tonic) facilitates the absorption of the oil into the skin. By combining oil and water, you promote better penetration of the active ingredients into the deepest layers of the skin. This also provides a lighter sensation, without oily residue on the skin. Oil acts as a barrier that traps moisture in the skin, helping to prevent dehydration. Similarly, oils are applied at the very end of your beauty routine, thus respecting its high molecular weight.
–Not adapting your routine according to the climate
The humidity level affects the hydration of your skin. It will not have the same needs whether you live in a humid climate or a dry climate. In a humid environment, it will naturally be more hydrated but also more oily and prone to imperfections. In a dry climate, you must double up on moisturizing ingredients if you have dry skin.
–Not changing your pillowcase twice a week
Regularly changing your pillowcase is beneficial to prevent sebum and toxins evacuated during the night from accumulating and becoming embedded in the pillowcase. This prevents irritation, clogged pores and acne.
