Golden Hour Fitness: The Summer Workout Routine That Actually Sticks

Day eleven, and we’re moving from style into the body-and-mind stretch of the series. My golden hour fitness routinelooks nothing like what I did in January — and I’m stronger for it.

Golden Hour Fitness: A Slower Rhythm

I stopped forcing intense workouts in the heat this year and built a summer workout routine around consistency instead of intensity.

The Morning Shift

Everything happens before 9 a.m. now, before the heat sets in.

  • The single change that’s improved consistency more than any workout plan itself
  • Cooler temperatures make every session feel more sustainable
  • Frees up the rest of the day for everything else in this series

What “Slow Movement” Actually Means

Walking, swimming, and simple bodyweight strength work replaced most of my higher-intensity routine.

  • Less strain on the body in extreme heat
  • Better recovery between sessions
  • Arguably more consistent overall than a harder routine I couldn’t sustain

What I Kept

Two short strength sessions a week, non-negotiable.

  • Everything else in this series — clothes fitting well, energy for long days — depends on this foundation staying in place
  • Kept intentionally short so it never feels like a barrier to showing up
  • Bodyweight or light dumbbells only, nothing that requires a big time investment

Pro Tip: If a morning workout window feels impossible, even a ten-minute walk before the heat peaks does more for consistency than a “perfect” workout squeezed in during the hottest part of the day.

FAQ: Summer Fitness

Q: Is it bad to reduce workout intensity in summer? A: Not at all — matching intensity to what your body can sustain in the heat usually leads to better consistency than pushing through discomfort.

Q: How do I stay motivated to work out in extreme heat? A: Shift the timing rather than fighting the heat directly. Early morning or evening sessions make a bigger difference than any motivation trick.

Q: What’s the minimum amount of strength training worth keeping in summer? A: Two short sessions a week is enough to maintain strength without feeling like a burden, even during the busiest summer weeks.

Final Thoughts

I used to treat summer as a reason to push harder in workouts. This year I let it be a reason to soften the intensity instead, and I genuinely feel better for it.
