Scalp Exfoliation
All about scalp exfoliation as a hair scrub to soothe the scalp and refresh the curls.
What is a scalp exfoliation used for?
The exfoliation removes all the impurities accumulated on the scalp: product residues, dead cells, dandruff, etc.
This hair care purifies and aerates the scalp which brings softness, lightness and volume to the curls. The exfoliating agent will stimulate blood circulation and tone the roots which will accelerate hair growth!
In addition, it allows to re-balance the roots and to regulate the sebum (top to space the washes). It soothes difficult scalps by calming itching and fighting dandruff.
For what types of hair?
Primarily recommended for oily and problem scalps, scalp Exfoliation is suitable for all hair types and all scalps. However, it is not recommended to do it when the scalp is irritated so as not to sensitize it.
How often Should you exfoliate your hair?
It is advisable to exfoliate once a month in order to purify the scalp without attacking it. However, oily roots can be exfoliated twice a month, and normal to dry roots every 6 weeks.
There are several ways to exfoliate your scalp: you can perform your treatment yourself or choose 1 ready-to-use one. The advantage of exfoliating treatments is that they have finer grains than homemade scrubs. Also, their researched composition implies more benefits.
The exfoliating shampoo can be your monthly treatment to rebalance the roots. Its main advantage is that it replaces shampoo because it exfoliates and cleanses the scalp at the same time.

Make your own natural exfoliating treatment
Since there is something for everyone, it is possible to do your own treatment and adapt it, both to the needs of your hair and to what you find in your kitchen! Plus, what’s great about DIY homemade hair scrubs is that they’re 2-in-1 and can also be used for the body!
To make your scrub, simply mix equal parts 1 exfoliating agent and 1 liquid agent to hydrate/nourish and facilitate application. I share with you a non-exhaustive list of choices to combine, depending on what you have in your cupboards and the needs of your scalp:
Exfoliating powders:
- Salt: regenerates and purifies. But very abrasive so not recommended for sensitive scalps.
- Sugar: protects against toxins, regenerates. Not very aggressive, very good for sensitive and dry scalps.
- Coffee grounds (for brunettes): purifies, excellent against itching and dandruff. Very soft, suitable for sensitive scalps, it is a 3-in-1 (hair, face and body).
Liquid agents:
- Honey (vegan option: agave syrup): hydrates, purifies, softens, regenerates.
- Flax or aloe vera gel: moisturizes, soothes, softens.
- Vegetable oil: nourishes, soothes, strengthens (+ properties depending on the oil chosen).
- A purifying shampoo: to exfoliate and cleanse at the same time!
The options :
You can mix 1 moisturizing ingredient with 1 vegetable oil if you wish.
It is possible to add 1 to 2 drops of essential oil of your choice ( Tea tree (purifies, purifies), Peppermint (tonifies, stimulates growth), Atlas cedar (limits hair loss),β¦
How to proceed :
- Make your scrub by combining the ingredients of your choice.
- Wet your hair thoroughly.
- Apply your treatment, section by section (to be sure to put it everywhere and make your job easier) then massage your scalp with your fingertips.
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
- Then go to your usual washing routine (shampoo, conditioner, etc.).
