At-Home Hair Removal Methods
Did you know that we have 5 million hairs on our bodies? Whether you are a brunette, redhead, or blonde, we all have the same number of hairs. However, their thickness and color vary from one person to another. While some have barely visible hair, others have the impression of having as much hair as a Quebec lumberjack. If you are rather angry with your body hair and want to say goodbye to it, you need to know all about the at-home removal methods that exist to get rid of it and make the right choice!
What methods should you use to remove hair?
–Shaving with a razor:
One of the most common techniques, it is however, not ideal in the long term.
Positive side: It is ultra-fast and leaves the skin very soft. Very practical when you’re in a hurry, you can even shave in the shower. It is also quite economical.
Negative side: The hairs resurface very quickly and much coarser. The razor also promotes the appearance of ingrown hairs. In addition, when we shave an area of hair we often tend to also shave the hair around it, which gradually enlarges the area of hair! In addition to cuts, blades used every day can have an irritating effect on the skin (especially if you let them rust on the edge of the bathtub). Finally, certain areas, such as the low-cut swimsuit, are difficult to access.
–Depilatory Creams
This method does not pull out the hair either but weakens it on the surface thanks to chemical active ingredients which dissolve the keratin of the hair at its base.
Positive side: The hair removal cream is painless and therefore perfect for snugs. Unlike the razor which cuts the hair cleanly and makes it grow back thicker, the cream makes it grow back gently and you have peace of mind for about a week. It does not represent a big budget and can be applied to all areas, taking care to avoid mucous membranes.
Negative side: Even if efforts have been made for several years, the depilatory cream does not have the most pleasant smell. In addition, its chemical composition can sensitize the epidermis. It is therefore imperative not to exceed the prescribed exposure time. To avoid drying out the skin, it is better to choose a formula enriched with sweet almond oil or shea butter, for example.
–Wax
Hot or cold, in strips or in a jar, there are many ways to wax. It is one of the techniques that eliminates the maximum amount of hair for a longer lasting period than the razor or depilatory cream. The reason ? This is because the wax pulls out the hair and its bulb, it does not just have a surface action. Additionally, over time, waxing makes the hair much finer.
–Cold wax:
Positive side: Very practical, the cold wax strips are ready to use and contain the right dose of product to get rid of hair. They are also practical to take on vacation for example.
Negative side: You need a minimum of dexterity to pull out the hairs without hurting yourself too much and they are not very suitable for certain areas such as the armpits or the bikini line. If poorly heated, they can leave wax on the skin and not remove all the hairs targeted. You then have to go over it several times, which is painful.
–Hot wax:
Most often presented in pot form, there are many varieties on the market: oriental with sugar, honey, chocolate, etc.
Positive side: It dilates the pores and makes it easier to remove hair. It offers several weeks of tranquility.
Negative side: This technique requires time (to heat the wax, let it rest, etc.) and a certain amount of help. The risk of burns is quite common. It is not recommended for people suffering from varicose veins and blood circulation problems. We often tend to put a layer of wax that is too thick on the area: as a result, the wax dries poorly and does not catch the hair. When it comes to pain, everyone has their own tolerance threshold. But if you want to be sure of the result, head to the beauty salon.
–The electric epilator
Like a multitude of tweezers working at the same time, the electric epilator pulls out the hairs at the root. If classic epilators are limited to epilating the legs and arms, others, using specific tips, can also epilate the armpits and the face or even the bikini line.
Positive side: Fast, it leaves the skin soft for several weeks and refines hair.
Negative side: This technique is quite painful and often leaves red pimples on the skin. In addition, if you want a model that can reach all areas, this represents a budget.
–Intense Pulsed LightΒ
The solution for long-lasting hair removal. The pulsed light technique works thanks to the concentration of light waves towards the hair follicle, the pigment present therein absorbs the light and heats the follicle, which slows down hair growth.
Positive side: IPL epilators will gradually make your hair disappear. In 3 months (then a touch-up every 6 months depending on your initial hair growth), your hair will soon be nothing more than a bad memory.
Negative side: The devices are costly and do not work on dark, dark skin or light hair. In this case, you must go to a specialized institute. In addition, they should be avoided on sensitive areas.
