How To Care For Dry Hair
As with skin, there are different types of hair with specific needs. Today we are going to talk to you about dry hair, help you understand why it is dry and give you some tips on how to care for dry hair naturally!
Why is my hair dry?
Some hair, by its nature, is drier than others. This is particularly the case for curly, frizzy and kinky hair. Sebum has difficulty spreading throughout the hair fiber, the latter not having a shape that facilitates the process. You should know that sebum is secreted naturally and that its mission is to nourish, moisturize and protect the hair from external aggressions.
So you understand why hair lacking sebum (yes, which on the contrary produces too much sebum poorly distributed on the hair fiber) is drier than others.
There are of course other reasons why hair is drier and the treatments we subject it to can be the cause. Chemical coloring, straightening, blow-drying and repeated straightening change the nature of the hair. The latter has difficulty staying hydrated. Also, pollution, the water we use or the sun are not without remainder.
How to recognize dry hair?
If you feel your hair dry to the touch even after your treatments, if it is damaged and brittle, you probably have dry hair. It is generally more difficult to style and discipline. You will have to adapt your routine to pamper it and make it softer.
How to care for dry hair
The watchword, gentleness. To take care of dry hair, you must choose a gentle routine and care that will not attack and dry out the hair. This routine must be moisturizing, nourishing and fortifying.
–Shampoo
Dry hair does not like daily washing. The risk of washing your hair too often is removing its natural sebum. Shampooing once a week is more than enough. Make sure to choose gentle, non-drying cleansing treatments. We recommend sulfate-free shampoos, no poo or cleansing creams.
–Conditioner
If your hair needs detangling, conditioner is essential. It will help you gently remove all the knots and coat your hair fibers at the same time. As with shampoo, choose a gentle, sulfate-free detangler (yes, sulfates are found in many conditioners). Once applied to your damp hair, detangle in portions and rinse.
–Mask
Remember when we told you that dry hair needed to be pampered? This is one of the important steps in your hair care routine. The hair mask will deeply nourish your hair and fill in any deficiencies.
Choose specific masks for dry hair, often rich in oils or butters. The masks that we find in stores for dry hair contain very few noble materials and often silicones. We recommend that you read the compositions carefully.
And if you don’t find what you’re looking for, make your own treatments with natural bases to personalize. Leave it on especially on the lengths and ends (the scalp does not need a mask), under a heat source for at least 30 minutes for better action (heated helmet, hot towel, etc.).
–Drying
To dry your hair without damaging it, there’s nothing like air drying, but we don’t all have time for that. You can use the hair dryer on a cold setting because the heat can dry it out.
To complete your routine, and if your hair requires it, you can moisturize and nourish it daily. A leave-in moisturizer followed by a vegetable oil will help keep your hair supple and soft. For frizzy hair, you can add a butter to seal in moisture.
Some tips for dry hair
-During your hair care routine, remember to rinse your hair with lukewarm water, or even cold water for the bravest. Water that is too hot will remove the natural sebum and therefore make the hair drier.
-To neutralize the limescale in the water on your hair, use a mixture of cider vinegar and water for your last rinse water (2 tbsp. of vinegar in ½ liter of water). Your hair will also be shinier.
-To style your hair, be sure to choose products that do not contain alcohol. Alcohol is very drying and putting it on your hair every day will only dry it out.
-Protect your hair from the cold, the sun’s rays and even when you sleep. Rubbing on classic pillowcases makes your hair drier. We recommend sleeping with a satin bonnet and if you don’t find it glamorous, opt for a satin pillowcase.
-Hydrate and nourish your hair regularly: Natural oils help to keep hair well hydrated. You will find nourishing hair oils based on olive, jojoba, coconut or sunflower oil in different forms:
- Hair conditioners and serums protect the scalp by preventing it from drying out and provide the necessary hydration to the hair.
- Hair oil baths are perfect for hydrating and softening them.
-Moisturize from the inside out: Good hair hydration requires a healthy diet for strong hair: a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals based on fruits, vegetables, proteins and healthy fats. Add to that 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day and you will find flamboyant hair!
-Use a wide-toothed comb: A makeover with a gentle hair brushing? A wide-toothed comb helps to detangle hair without damaging it. Moderate use of styling products helps prevent hair from drying out.
By caring for your dry hair with a proper routine and following these tips, you can help maintain healthy, balanced hair, and reduce the appearance of straw-like hair.
