How To Choose The Right Bathtub?

The ally of comfort and well-being in a bathroom is none other than… the bathtub! Available in a multitude of versions, it can be found from the simplest to the most sophisticated, such as the whirlpool. No matter your needs, your desires or the space in your bathroom, there will always be a model that suits you. We take stock of the tips on how to choose the right bathtub to help you with your bathtub installation project!

How To Choose The Right Bathtub?

Shape and size: how to combine the two?

When installing a bathroom, the available space is the first element to take into account when choosing the size of your bathtub. It will therefore be necessary to take the precise dimensions of your bathroom in order to choose the best option.

For installation, once again there is no shortage of choice: built-in models, floor-standing models and others on feet, everything is possible!

In terms of practicality, and in the case of a family with children for example, an ergonomic model with a lower threshold (53 cm instead of 58 cm) can be a good solution to facilitate access.

The clawfoot bathtub

The “shoe” bathtub is the ally of small bathrooms. Compact and practical at the same time, this type of bathtub measures 100 to 150 cm long and 70 cm wide, ideal for small spaces. In terms of practicality, this shape is perfect for bathing children. On the other hand, space is really limited for adults.

The corner bathtub

The corner bathtub also saves space. However, it requires having two walls long enough to accommodate it. Models exist from 120 x 120 cm but, for more comfort, opt for a more spacious version (from 140 x 140 cm) if space allows.

The asymmetrical bathtub

The asymmetrical bathtub is a mix between the classic rectangular model and the corner one. Wider on one side than the other, it allows you to free up space while offering enough volume to take a bath. It does not go unnoticed and gives a rather designer dimension to the bathroom.

The straight bathtub

The straight bathtub, the most classic model. It is generally rectangular or oval in shape, for dimensions ranging from 160 to 180 cm long and 70 to 80 cm wide. It easily adapts to all styles of bathroom.

The bathtub with integrated shower space

The bathtub with integrated shower space is another equally practical model, which allows a significant saving of space. This clever product thus combines the relaxing side of the bathtub, and the functionality of the shower. Often asymmetrical in shape, the shower space is wider (85 or 90 cm), in order to offer more ease of movement, and with a flat bottom, to avoid slipping. The bath/shower combination also has a glass bathtub screen that limits water splashes. In terms of budget, there are models starting at €500.

The freestanding bathtub

Finally, the freestanding bathtub which is the Rolls Royce of bathtubs…. But only for spacious bathrooms! The height of luxury, this oval or geometric model can be installed directly in the center of the room. It can be placed on the floor or on feet, and benefits from a wide range of styles: modern, classic or retro. It requires specific installation and taps, all the plumbing must be embedded in the floor. In terms of budget, count on a minimum of €600.

What material should I choose for my bathtub?

Cast iron, steel, acrylic… Bathtubs are available in all types of materials.

Cast iron is the traditional material for bathtubs, especially those in a retro or vintage style. Enameled cast iron is very heavy but extremely resistant, and its main advantage is that it retains heat. The offer is nevertheless quite limited in terms of models and the cost remains high.

Enamelled steel bathtubs are the most classic, often with a very simple design. However, they are very resistant and easy to maintain. In terms of performance, be aware that steel retains heat well and is much lighter than cast iron. The only downside to steel is noise. In order to limit the “sound box” effect, it is therefore advisable to insulate the underside of the bathtub, with soundproofing panels for example. Count from €100 for a 160 x 70 cm model.

Acrylic bathtubs (or synthetic resin) represent by far the widest offer on the market. Acrylic is a material that, unlike cast iron or steel, can be made in many shapes and sizes. Often reinforced with resin or fiberglass, acrylic bathtubs are lightweight and retain heat well. Given the number of models available, you will easily find the one that suits you best.

Finally, it is so important whenchoosing a bathtub, to remember to consider your bathroom layout, available space, and overall aesthetic preferences.
