How To Put A Rug In A Bedroom

The bedroom rug is just as important as the bed itself. At first glance, this statement may seem strange, but think about it: to create a comfortable bedroom decor, a bed is not enough, no matter how comfortable, soft, spacious and expensive it is. It is in this room that we need softness and warmth as soon as we cross the threshold. You therefore understand that here we cannot do without textiles in general – and carpets in particular. So how to put a rug in a bedroom? keep reading to find out!

How to put a rug in a bedroom

So, while the β€œto be or not to be” question about the rug in the bedroom is clear, it is essential to decide exactly how you are going to place it. It is usually under or next to the bed. Sometimes it is enough to get a few centimeters wrong in your position, and the room will not look too harmonious and you will feel inexplicably uncomfortable. As decorators joke, carpet, like mathematics, likes precision.

We will not dwell in detail on what the size of the carpet for the bedroom should be, its color and texture. We would now like to dwell in more detail on the placement of the rug, which can present not only tonal and textural balance, but also visual geometric balance.

What to focus on when choosing the position of the carpet in the bedroom

In interior design, everything can never be too simple – and this is an example. Buying and putting a rug spontaneously in your room is not a good idea, because too much depends on its position. The precarious position of furniture, an indistinct combination of textures, a poorly opening door, an incomprehensible and ridiculous arrangement of interior items are here only as examples of the consequences of such carelessness. We don’t want to scare you – we’re just telling you why you shouldn’t neglect the arrangement of carpets in the bedroom.

So, if you are looking for aesthetics and perfection in everything, including your decor of your living room, it is time to know what to pay attention to when planning your bedroom rug placement.

  • The size and layout of the room. If your bedroom space is impressive, then you have more room to maneuver. However, if the room is not too spacious or there are protrusions in it, you will need to carefully think of the position of the carpet. However, one should not think that the situation is hopeless: decorators have many recipes in store for this. And by the way: make sure that when you open the door it doesn’t get stuck on the carpet – that’s very disappointing.
  • Bed dimensions. It can be single or double, or even larger, and even curved – in any case, how you are going to lay the carpet depends on it. Of course, this factor is also essential for the size of the rugs – and perfection, as usual, lies somewhere in between.
  • The size and shape of the rug itself. Whether you like small narrow hallways or fell under the spell of a huge textile miracle with luxurious patterns – in both cases (and in everything else) you will have to correlate its features not only with images and configuration of the room but also with the arrangement of the furniture. Are you ready to take action?
  • Bedroom furnishings. Have you chosen two bedside tables or have you decided to limit yourself to just one? Do you have a dressing table with an ottoman in your bedroom or just a console? Are you planning to install a wardrobe or is a chest of drawers enough for you? The answers to all these questions will undoubtedly become fateful for the placement of the carpet. The fact is that bedroom furniture should either rest entirely on the carpet or not touch it at all. It is this choice that we must think carefully about.

As you can see, when laying the carpet there are not so few details to consider. However, for everything to fall into place quickly, take the time to try it out. Try different styling options until you achieve harmony. However, if you have very little time, it’s worth listening to decorators’ opinions.

How to put a rug in a bedroom: Carpet placement

Here is a detailed description of the options for installing the carpet in the bedroom – the most logical, the most obvious, but not devoid of some charming nuances.

At the foot of the bed

Such placement of the rug is possible in several cases. If your bedroom is small, if you need to create a composition with an ottoman or a bench at the foot of the bed. Or in cases where the rug is small but so good that you definitely want to see it every time you enter the room…

Many designers are quite skeptical about such a solution, considering it too old-fashioned. However most are still convinced: trend comes after comfort. In fact, the rug at the foot of the bed looks interesting. It you to immediately appreciate the balance of textures and shades you have created.

As you have probably already guessed, this option is only allowed if the rug you have selected is tiny. But no more than 120 Γ— 180 cm, and even less if possible. In this case, you need to start with the relationship between its proportions and the bed.

In the case of carpets narrower than the bed or of the same width, free space must be left around. Otherwise, its size and design will not be suitable. About the size of this same space, the opinions of decorators vary slightly. But on average they call the figure 30-40cm. If the rug is much wider than the bed, simply place it at the foot of the bed. You can place an ottoman or bench on top (in this case, this technique is authorized), or leave it open.

You can use a rug in this way if you have underfloor heating or solid parquet flooring. In all other cases, you will have to complete it with runners on the sides of the bed. Or you will have to adopt the principle of layering. This consists to put a small rug at the foot of the bed on top of the large one on which the bed is place.

On the side of the bed

Placing the rug on one or both sides of the bed is an excellent solution. And not only for small textiles (120Γ—180 cm maximum). You can also use it in the following cases:

  • In small rooms where the bed is pushed against the wall, or there is simply no room to place a large rug. In these cases, a small rug will help kill two birds with one stone. And add warmth and style and provide a comfortable exit from bed.
  • In spacious rooms, where combinations of several rugs of different sizes are possible.
  • In multi-layer compositions, where small rugs are placed on top of a large one on each side of the bed.

If you use small rugs on the side of the bed on bare flooring, make sure there is at least 30-40cm of free flooring around them to showcase color, pattern and texture. Also, let yourself be guided by the number of bedside tables. If you only have one, place the rug on the other side of the bed for more balance.

Under the bed

This solution can be called the most popular and harmonious. The close contact of furniture and textiles creates the very cozy atmosphere that many of us dream of. At the same time, you have several options for positioning the rug in relation to the bed – and each of them will undoubtedly interest you:

  • Carpet slightly tucked under the bed. If your room is large or has an elongated rectangular shape, this option will be useful to you. You can put the rug under the furniture about 15 to 45 cm, depending on the size of the product, and that should be enough. You can leave the visible part of the rug as is or place other furniture there. Including a chair or side table, a floor console and even a small dressing table. That said, you should have at least 30-60cm of open flooring on either side of the bed for symmetry and a harmonious blend of flooring and textiles.
  • Carpet pushed at least three-quarters under the bed. This option is equally suitable for getting out of bed comfortably and balancing bedside tables and a bench or ottoman at the foot of the bed. The mat should stay out about 75-90 cm, so as you can imagine it should be quite large.
  • Diagonal layout of the carpet. If you want something extraordinary and unique and the size of your room allows it, you can easily stretch the rug diagonally across one corner of the bed. So it will look unexpected and at the same time very attractive.

All decorating solutions with a rug pushed under the bed in one way or another are possible only in cases where the product is large enough – at least 150 Γ— 215 cm. It’s also important to consider the interaction of the furniture with the rug. Everything, except the bed, should either be entirely on the surface of the textile. Or not touch it at all and not even come close to it. If this happens, you should definitely think about an easy rearrangement.

The carpet in the bedroom guarantees visual and physical comfort, beauty and completeness of the interior. Be sure to explore all the layout possibilities and choose the one that suits you best. You will be able to enjoy not only relaxation, but also a harmonious environment around.
