The Best Cleansing Balms

Did you think cleansing oil, micellar water and wipes were the only options for removing makeup? Think again ! Cleansing balms are taking over the skin care world! Discover the best cleansing balms to add to your cleansing routine.

From long-wearing lipsticks and foundations to smudge-proof eye shadows and cream blushes for the night, a cleansing balm (CB) effortlessly melts away makeup-based makeup oil and impurities without drying out the skin.

What is a cleansing balm?

Makeup removing balms are creamy, rich cleansers that are very effective at dissolving heavy eye and facial makeup. They also remove any dirt that may have built up throughout the day.

They have a sorbet-like texture that melts into a silky cleansing oil when massaged into dry skin, then transforms into a milky emulsion with water that easily cleanses the skin.

CB formulation usually contains hydrating ingredients, like butter, oils that help hydrate your skin during or after cleansing. The CB has a solid texture that is perfect for on the go and for the first step in a double cleansing routine.

What type of skin should use the cleansing balm?

All skin types can use cleansing balms, but mostly normal, very dry and sensitive skin. However, some CB may be too heavy for oily or breakout-prone skin. So choose the formula suited to your skin type (take a look at the skin care section for an in depth blog post about the best cleansers for you skin type).

How should I use the cleansing balm?

For the first step of your double cleanse, take a small amount of cleansing balm on your fingertips (either directly in the tub or with a spatula for a more hygienic option), then begin massaging it into your dry face using making circular movements from the center of the face outwards.

It helps melt oil-based impurities like sunscreen, waterproof mascara, eyeliner and any oils (sebum, sweat) from the skin’s surface. Follow with a water-based formula such as a cleansing foam, cleansing milk or cleansing cream to remove any residue from the pores.

Should I use water with a cleansing balm?

This is a question we often ask ourselves. The answer is simple: we must apply a cleansing balm dry first (yes, without water).

This is because the oils in the balm need to be attracted to the oils in the skin before adding water. Once water you add water, the surfactants release surface tension in the skin, lifting and removing makeup and allowing it to be rinsed away.
