The Most Beautiful Places To Visit In Montenegro

Are you going to Montenegro? Here is a list of the most beautiful places to visit in Montenegro that you absolutely must plan for in your trip!

Independent since 2006, Montenegro is a trendy destination. The small Balkan country has beautiful attractions to promote: sea, mountains, splendid landscapes, hiking. Before setting off on an adventure, here are the must-see sites to visit!

Kotor

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kotor is one of the jewels of Montenegro. The city is located at the southern end of the Mouths of Kotor, a true Norwegian aber. Kotor’s main attraction is its Old Town or Stari Grad, which is reminiscent of Dubrovnik. A real maze of cobbled streets with its old buildings and churches that you can only admire with your feet. Take the time to have a meal or a simple coffee in one of the many squares of the old town.

In Kotor, you can also walk along the harbor to breathe some fresh air. For the more athletic, you can climb the 1530 steps to access the fortress from the old town. The view of the city and the aber is fabulous. If the fortress seems very far to you, there is a spot after about fifty steps. Access is chargeable in summer but free the rest of the year.

Herceg-Novi

This city is a real favorite of Generation Voyage. Located a stone’s throw from Croatia, Herceg Novi compensates for the lack of interest of its new town with a magnificent old town. The architecture differs from that of Kotor and one quickly feels carried away by its buildings, its terraces and its churches. Do not hesitate to visit the citadel by the sea, which offers you a breathtaking view of the other side of the Mouths of Kotor. No wonder many expats choose Herceg Novi as their base!

During a short break, enjoy a kuvana kafa on the terrace. Long a land of the Ottoman Empire, Montenegro has retained certain Turkish traditions. Turkish coffee is one of the most striking. Herceg Novi being a fairly local town, you will have more chance to taste it than in Kotor.

Ostrog Monastery

Here is the most visited monument in Montenegro and it is easy to understand why. Located on a mountainside, accessible by a scary road, the monastery rewards the effort. Built in the 17th century, the present appearance of the monastery dates from the 1920s after its reconstruction following a fire. You can admire a building playing with the mountain, magnificent frescoes and, here too, a breathtaking view. As always, you will be more relaxed to visit it outside the two summer months.

If you rent a car, it is important to take into account the perilous access to the monastery. Especially since buses can appear out of nowhere. If you don’t feel like driving, don’t hesitate to take a taxi. From Podgorica or Nikลกiฤ‡, the prices are correct if you are four people in the car.

Skadar Lake

Arriving by plane in Podgorica, this is the body of water observed before landing. Border between Montenegro and Albania, Lake Skadar offers landscapes from elsewhere. To admire it, go to Virpazar, the starting point for small cruises. Two hours long, it allows you to explore every nook and cranny of this superb natural lake. You can even swim in it!

For those who have rented a car, you can go to the Pavlona Strana viewpoint to have the most beautiful panorama of the lake. It is also the most famous viewpoint in Montenegro.

Durmitor National Park

Montenegro is full of national parks, such as Lake Skadar. We had to choose one in this little article, the best known of them. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Durmitor is a mountain range located in the northeast of Montenegro. The national park is suitable for both summer and winter. Indeed, you can go hiking there in summer as well as skiing in winter!

The Durmitor tourist center is located in the town of ลฝabljak. In summer, do not hesitate to explore to discover the glacier lakes of the park. Eighteen in number, the best known of them is Lac Noir. The Durmitor is a journey within the journey. You can spend many days there and camp there. Mountain lovers will be enchanted by these magical landscapes!

Petrovac

Instead of Budva, the most touristic city in Montenegro, it is better to direct you to a nearby town. Indeed, Petrovac is a city that is still authentic, calm and with magnificent landscapes. A splendid view of the sea in the distance and the mountain behind you.

In Petrovac, you can take the time to rest, dine or have a drink along the port. Of course, the beach is also a popular activity! Finally, know that you can take a boat to get to Budva and the surrounding area. The best view is unquestionably from the ruins of the old castle that you will find just west of the city.

Kolasin

Ski ? Let’s talk about it ! We must not forget winter sports enthusiasts with a destination for the start of the year. Indeed, Kolaลกin does not present much interest in summer. Nevertheless, winter is THE spot in Montenegro! Enthusiasts will have a great time and will be able to taste the Balkan powder. The station is located 10 minutes from the city and around 1700 meters above sea level.

We grant you, it is a small station. But it is ideal for skiers because you can find all types of slopes and lifts here. Also the prices defy all competition compared to what we find in France or around. January, February or even March are the best months to stay in Kolaลกin.

The surroundings of Sveti Stefan

No, you are not being asked to stay on this luxury island like Novak Djokovic and others! And this paragraph is not intended for those visiting Montenegro in the middle of summer. Indeed, in very high season, the beaches and surroundings are privatized and the day costs 100 โ‚ฌ! However, outside the summer months, privatization ceases. You can then walk along the most beautiful beaches in Montenegro and swim if the weather is on your side.

The recommended walk is between Sveti Stefan and the village of Prลพno (pronounced โ€œperjnoโ€). A good hour, really taking your time. We feel carried away by these splendid landscapes, the beauty of the island of Sveti Stefan and Villa Milocer. It is also advisable to have a coffee or a meal at the restaurant located opposite Sveti Stefan. Surprisingly, the prices are very correct despite the luxury surrounding it.
