The Special Routine For Oily Hair

Does your hair get greasy too quickly and forces you to wash it every day? Don’t panic. Here is a special routine for oily hair that is ideal to take care of it.

How to recognize oily hair?

If sebum lubricates the hair and prevents it from becoming too dry, it sometimes happens that it is produced in too great a quantity. This is precisely the case for oily hair. Indeed, the latter has the particularity of producing too great a quantity of sebum and consequently it tends to “grease” much more quickly than the others (i.e. to present an oily appearance at the roots).

This overproduction of sebum can be linked to different causes: stress, a hormonal problem, a poor diet (too oily or too sweet), an unsuitable hair routine (with washing too frequently) or even pollution.

Before anything else, here are several tips to help you:

  • Be careful not to use too much dry shampoo: overusing it can cause damage to your scalp, which in turn will increase its sebum production (which is precisely what we want to avoid).
  • It may happen that your roots tend to get greasy easily but your ends are dry. In this case: alternate your shampoos with products intended for normal hair (less drying) or apply deep hydration masks to the affected areas.
  • Avoid touching your hair too much (by running your hands through it for example) because this can contribute to making your hair greasy more quickly.
  • Be sure to respect your scalp and never attack it (with unsuitable care for example) because if there is one thing to remember it is that an attacked scalp = additional production of sebum. So treat it with respect and gentleness.

Step one: brushing

Avoid brushing your hair too often (1 to 2 times a day is more than enough) because brushing stimulates the scalp and by this simple action, increases sebum production.

Step two: washing

Distribute your shampoo gently on your head and do not rub too vigorously (your scalp could take this as an aggression and in response, produce more sebum). As for products, you will have to juggle like a pro between different shampoos.

First of all, opt for shampoos specifically designed to help oily hair with their purifying and sebum-regulating action, but be careful not to use them every time you wash it because your hair risks retaliating by increasing sebum production. Once or twice a week is more than enough. And in the meantime, use a pH-neutral shampoo (i.e. pH 7) which will reduce the acidity of the scalp without attacking it. These two types of shampoos will be your favorite weapons to fight against your oily hair (while taking care of it).

A little tip: add a drop of purifying essential oil to your shampoo. We are thinking in particular of lavender, lemon, Atlas cedar or even tea tree. These will help to cleanse your scalp without attacking it.

Be careful not to wash your hair too frequently. It is very tempting and yet it risks reinforcing the vicious circle in which your hair finds itself. So try to space out your shampoos as much as possible (every 3 days is a very good start).
As for your conditioner: this is when you need to pamper your ends. Especially if they are dry (which is quite common given the fact that shampoos for oily hair tend to dry out the hair). Opt for restorative and nourishing balms (to be applied only to your ends) to get your hair back to life and without the slightest oily sheen.

Third step: rinsing

If possible, rinse your hair with lukewarm water rather than boiling water to avoid damaging your scalp.

Fourth step: drying

As for drying, limit the use of hair dryers at all costs. They tend to make your hair greasy faster because of the heat they give off. The same goes for heated styling appliances (such as hair straighteners or curling irons). They have the same effect and should therefore be used sparingly!

Fifth step: masks

Opt for green clay masks which are cleansing and purifying. Once or twice a week, apply the clay (in its pure state) to your roots (and only then at the risk of seriously drying out your ends) and leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, do your usual shampoo.

Change your habits

The appearance of oily hair is also due to lifestyle habits. Slightly changing these behaviors as part of your oily hair routine, through small daily actions, can help prevent this problem and maintain dreamy hair every day!

Space out shampoos. When you have oily hair, you tend to want to wash it more often to avoid the unpleasant feeling of dirty hair. However, washing it too often can lead to an overproduction of sebum as a protective reaction. You may even end up with oily roots and dry ends by washing it so often. The only solution: get out of this vicious circle and limit yourself to an oily hair routine limited to 1-2 shampoos per week to regulate sebum production. Also remember to finish your shampoo with cool water to tone the hair and avoid overproduction of sebum.

Adopt scalp massage gestures before shampooing to stimulate blood circulation and restore balance at the hair roots. Avoid running your hands through your hair or the roots too often. Especially with dirty hands, which is perceived as an external aggression by the hair. Also avoid using a hair dryer or iron at too high a temperature, which will attack the hair.

Finally, adopt a balanced diet, respect your oily hair routine, for excellent health! Oily hair is not an insoluble problem, there are many treatments and tips to solve it.

By caring for your oily hair with a proper routine and following these tips, you can help maintain healthy, balanced hair, and reduce the appearance of grease and shine.
