Tips For Eating Well And Staying Hydrated During Heatwaves

In the case of extreme heat, the first instinct is to keep cool as much as possible and drink plenty of fluids. But certain foods and drinks should be favored, and others should be avoided. Here are some tips for eating well and staying hydrated during heatwaves.

Tips For Eating Well And Staying Hydrated During Heatwaves

Risk of heatwave? Drink water, lots of water!

Normally, it is recommended to drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day for an adult and at least 1 liter for a child. And in the event of a heatwave, you have to count it double.

So make sure you always have water on hand: bottle or tap water, it doesn’t matter! Be attentive: in babies, young children and the elderly, the feeling of thirst is reduced. You must therefore actively ensure that you maintain good hydration by drinking very regularly (every hour).

avoid Coffee, alcohol, and sodas

Obviously, not all drinks are equal in quenching thirst. Some, like coffee and alcoholic beverages, even have the opposite effect: because they are diuretics, they dehydrate more than they hydrate. The same goes for sodas, which are too sweet, which cause water loss. They should therefore be consumed with even more moderation than usual in the event of extreme heat.

Fruits and vegetables, sources of water

Of the 2.5 liters of water our body needs daily to maintain its hydration level, 1 liter is provided by food. Stars of summer, fruits and vegetables are our favorite allies in times of heatwave! Fresh, light, they are very rich in water and therefore constitute an excellent source of hydration. Favor fruits and vegetables less rich in sugars such as cucumber, melon, watermelon, tomato, zucchini, eggplant or lettuce. Mixed salads are yours, tasty, full of vitamins, easy to make and which you can vary endlessly according to your desires.

Starchy foods for energy

Appetite often tends to decrease with heat, and yet the body still needs energy! It is therefore important to maintain a balanced diet to provide it with everything it needs: fruits and vegetables of course, but also starchy foods (rice, pasta, potatoes, legumes) to fuel it throughout the day!

This is extremely important for children, seniors and people with a physical job or a sustained sporting activity. Legumes (lentils, peas, red or white beans, broad beans, chickpeas, etc.) are particularly interesting because they are also rich in fiber, proteins, vitamins (B, PP and C in particular) and trace elements.

Less meat, more eggs and yogurt

Because protein can be difficult to digest when it’s hot, it’s best to limit the consumption of fatty meats. Eggs are a good alternative, as are shellfish, and white fish. Finally, yogurts, made up of 75 to 90% water, can be consumed without problem even in the middle of a heatwave.
