Discover the top places to visit in Mauritius.

Top places to visit in Mauritius

The small African island of Mauritius is a cultural melting pot surrounded by sparkling white beaches and azure waters. Sightseeing tours that stop at the best attractions are a popular choice and even visitors with limited time can discover the island in its entirety. Marvel at the national parks, waterfalls, craters, botanical gardens and unique natural phenomena that make up the island, such as the Seven Coloured Earths. Mauritius offers a wide range of water sports, and the child-friendly activities also make it a great place for families. Not to mention the romantic beaches that lend themselves to idyllic honeymoons.

Île aux Cerfs

Mauritius is full of beautiful beaches, and it is hard to name the most exceptional. However, the white sands of Île aux Cerfs could claim this title. This private islet offers several pristine beaches, a wide range of water sports, a tropical jungle, an 18-hole golf course and one of the most luxurious hotels in Mauritius. It is also a great place to go snorkelling as its coral reef is home to a wealth of marine life. Board a catamaran that will take you across the azure waters of the thriving Île aux Cerfs – a dream!

Black River Gorges National Park

With its breathtaking views, superb hiking trails, lush forests, waterfalls and diverse flora and fauna, Black River Gorges National Park attracts visitors from all over the island. While the scenic drive through it offers one of the best viewpoints in the area, explore the indigenous forest on a day hike with one of the local guides. They will help you learn more about the vegetation and wildlife of Mauritius, and point out things you may not have noticed.

Grand Bassin Crater Lake

Near Black River Gorges National Park is Grand Bassin, an impressive volcanic crater lake. During the colonial period, many people were relocated from India to Mauritius, where they were promised a better life. A few centuries later, more than 48% of the Mauritian population was Hindu. Nicknamed Ganga Talao, Lake Grand-Bassin is sacred to this community, which has built many temples, shrines and statues on its banks over the years. The gigantic statues of Shiva and Durga Maa, over 33 metres high, are unmissable.

Dream beaches in the north and northwest

The reputation of the idyllic beaches in the north of the island is well-deserved. Whether it’s PΓ©reybΓ¨re, Mont-Choisy or Cap Malheureux, all invite you to relax and sunbathe. Indulge in water sports such as sailing, diving, snorkelling and windsurfing, and watch the sunset in the late afternoon. During a catamaran or motorboat cruise around the islands, you can take advantage of the stops to dive, observe dolphins or swim with turtles. Flat Island or Gabriel Island are ideal for a picnic or a swim in the crystal clear water.

Le Morne

Le Morne is an iconic mountain overlooking the sea, surrounded by a shallow lagoon, a coral reef and beautiful beaches. It is one of the most beautiful places in Mauritius, and the views of the area are absolutely breathtaking. To enjoy this incredible landscape, hike to the top, alone or on a guided tour. After a while, the bay surrounding Le Morne will reveal its panoramas. Water sports enthusiasts will appreciate the ideal conditions offered by the bay around Le Morne for kitesurfing or windsurfing.

Trou-aux-Cerfs Crater

Between religious temples, jungle, and tea and sugar plantations, lies the oasis of Trou aux Cerfs, a unique natural attraction of Mauritius. At the heart of this enormous volcanic cone at rest (350 m in diameter and 100 m deep) is nestled a crater lake surrounded by superb lush vegetation and giant green pines. From Trou aux Cerfs, you can enjoy an exceptional panoramic view that allows you to see most of the island including Curepipe and the magnificent Mount Rempart, the Trois Mamelles, and the Moka mountain range.

The Seven Coloured Earths

Mauritius is full of exceptional places, but one in particular will not fail to amaze you: the Seven Coloured Earths in Chamarel. It is a land made up of seven different layers of sand dunes formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago, although it is not known exactly how the dunes were so perfectly formed. If you are in the area, also take the opportunity to visit the impressive Chamarel Waterfall. The waters that pour from a height of more than 100 meters onto the cove below are a magnificent spectacle.

Caudan Waterfront, Port Louis

With its many attractions, Port Louis is the perfect place for a day of fun. Start your visit to the capital at the pretty waterfront named after Jean Dominique Michel de Caudan, a famous local personality. This modern waterfront is lined with shops, restaurants and cafes. You will also find a craft market here as well as the famous Blue Penny Museum. The museum is home to two of the most famous stamps: the Mauritius Red and the Mauritius Blue. The latter, the symbol of the island, is extremely valuable – an absolute must for stamp collectors.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden

Although the north of Mauritius is all about beaches and rum, don’t miss the extraordinary botanical garden near Port Louis. The Pamplemousses Botanical Garden (its alternative name) is one of the oldest in the southern hemisphere and is home to many plants and some animals. The main highlight of the garden is the Victoria Amazonica pond, also known as the giant water lilies. These incredible plants have crystal white flowers that only bloom at night, and their leaves can hold a child or a small person.

Tamarind Falls

Located in the centre-west of Mauritius, the Tamarind Falls and its surrounding area make for one of the best half-day excursions on the island. Also known as the 7 Cascades, these falls are the perfect place for nature lovers who like to stay active and have an adventurous spirit: hiking, swimming, canyoning, cliff jumping, bird watching, there is no shortage of activities. The hiking trail starts near a small village called Henrietta and the path along the falls is quite epic. You can walk there on your own or hire a local guide on site.
