Traveling to the north pole

Going to the North Pole still remains an adventure that few travelers attempt. And for good reason! It is a real journey that awaits them. The distance and the enormous sums to be incurred to afford this trip deter more than one. But if you want to try the adventure, and discover the North Pole (in the middle of the Arctic Ocean) here is what you need to know.

How to get there?

Going to the North Pole is no easy feat, and that’s an understatement to say! This is where you can use the services of a specialized company. It will allow you to reach the polar station of BarnΓ©o which is approximately 60 km from the North Pole. Most of the time, accommodation and meals will be offered to you there, this is one of the many packages available for visits to the North Pole.

From there a helicopter will be waiting for you. The helicopter trip lasts around thirty minutes. Once you reach just above the pole, it is customary to toast with a hot drink. Less than an hour later, you will be back in BarnΓ©o, the cold not allowing you to stay in the air any longer.

The other traditional way to reach the North Pole is by sea. You will then have to board a huge boat, traditionally a Russian icebreaker. A company like Adventure Life. Please note that these icebreakers generally depart from Helsinki in Finland.

Other options

If you have a sporty soul, you can reach the North Pole from the polar station on skis! This is done as part of an organized trip which can be spread over several days, but it is also possible to ski only the last 10 kilometers, just to live the experience, but over a bearable duration for people who are not overtrained.

If you like running, know that there is a marathon which takes place in April and goes to the North Pole.

Dog sledding and snowmobiling are more enjoyable options for those who are less active.

Warning

  • The weather conditions associated with a trip to the North Pole are, as you would expect, really extreme (the mercury can drop below minus 40 degrees).
  • Your equipment to combat the cold is therefore not necessary, but very vital.
  • Don’t neglect this, check with specialized stores to make the right choices. Some agencies that organize this type of trip to the pole lend clothing suitable for these extreme conditions, ask them.
  • Extreme conditions also mean that you are able to pay medical evacuation costs.
  • Also consider taking out travel insurance or at least checking what your insurance policy covers.
  • And if you like being cold, but in much more pleasant conditions, there are plenty of other options!
