How to Treat Yourself to a salon-worthy pedicure at home. Here is everything you need to know to nail a pedicure at home like a pro.

Our toenails deserve a makeover after their long hibernation in closed shoes and socks. Can’t make it to the salon for a pedicure? No worries, thanks to theses tips and techniques, treat yourself to a salon-worthy pedicure at home.

The impeccable feet at home operation is much easier than you think. Here are some tips for performing a pedicure like an expert.

The tools to treat yourself to a salon-worthy pedicure at home

  • Napkin
  • Basin (or bathtub)
  • Foot file or pumice stone
  • Nail kit (nail clippers, cuticle pusher, polisher and file)
  • Cotton discs
  • Toe separators (or tissue paper)
  • Acetone (or polish remover)
  • 1 tablespoon (for the basin) or a cup (for the bathtub) of Epsom salt or sea salt
  • 2 or 3 drops of essential oil of your choice
  • Exfoliating
  • Moisturizing foot cream (or body butter)
  • Base layer
  • Varnish
  • Top coat

Cleaning

Use acetone (more than varnish remover) to remove polish from nails. Acetone overcomes the most stubborn colors, avoiding friction.

Soak a cotton ball in acetone and place it on the nail, and wrap it in aluminum foil like a papillote for a minute or two. The solution dislodges the lacquer, which facilitates its removal. Note that this polish removal step should be done even if there is no nail polish, in order to start working on clean nails. You can get a 100% acetone solution at the pharmacy.

Soaking

The basin or tub is filled with hot water, into which the Epsom salt or sea salt is poured as well as the drops of essential oil. Epsom salt neutralizes odors (a must for very sweaty feet). Julie Bautista recommends tea tree essential oil for its antiseptic properties, eucalyptus to soothe pain and chamomile as an anti-inflammatory. Leave to soak for three to five minutes to soften the calluses.

Sanding and exfoliating

Using a pumice stone or a wooden foot file, remove dead skin and calluses. Emphasize the heels, soles and sides of the feet, and any areas where the skin is thick. It is essential to clean the tools well after each use, even if you are the only user.

The feet are plunged back into the water to rinse off the residue of the scrub, then they are coated with an exfoliant, without omitting the space between the toes. Finish the pampering with a moisturizing foot cream (or body butter). You can also turn to a mask for the feet. These little socks coated with ingredients like shea butter, cocoa, coconut or olive oil work wonders to get rid of calluses on your heels.

Sizing

You can use a nail clipper (the toenails being thicker and stronger than those of the hands). Whatever shape you prefer, you must soften the “corners” with a file to avoid ingrown nails, and above all, respect a golden rule in mani/pedicure: always file in the same direction so as not to not damage the keratin.

Remove the streaks and asperities using a polisher, then brush the body and the perimeter of the nails with cuticle oil. After one minute, remove the small unwanted skin using the pusher.

Laying the foundation

That’s it, the nails are clean and smooth. Pass a cotton pad soaked in acetone or solvent to remove all traces of grease left by the cream and oil. Otherwise, the varnish will not adhere. Then install the toe separators (rolled up tissues do the trick).

Crucial step: the application of a base coat, essential to protect the keratin and prolong the pedicure.

Applying the varnish

Better to apply a few thin coats of hairspray rather than laying down a large amount. This is the key to ensuring a smooth surface without grooves and to reduce drying time. Depending on the degree of coverage of the varnish, two or three coats are enough.

Finish off with a top coat that deposits a protective film and provides an unparalleled shine. Once the nails are dry, apply cuticle oil.

Correcting

The color overflows the nail? Here is a tip: clean up smudges using a thin brush dipped in acetone. Much more accurate than crumpled up tissue paper!

Maintaining

For the pedicure to hold up, you must continue to care for the appearance of the cuticles by reapplying oil. But not just for looks. The same goes for the health of the nails. After a few days, you can apply finishing varnish to restore the luster of the pedicure.
