Why And How To Exfoliate Your Face ?
Do you dream of having healthy-looking skin? Adding exfoliation to your skin care routine could well be the key to success! Just as essential as cleansing, this treatment, which optimizes the reconstruction of the skin, unclogs the dead cells of the epidermis while removing part of the stratum corneum. In addition, exfoliation allows your care to penetrate deeper into your skin. If you wonder why and how to exfoliate, keep reading.
Exfoliation helps to achieve:
- smoother, softer skin;
- tighter pores;
- a more radiant and even complexion.
- This care becomes particularly important when cell renewal slows down.
Chemical or mechanical exfoliation ?
Exfoliation, scrubbing, microdermabrasion and peeling⦠Which treatment should you choose? The best method depends on your preferences and skin type.
Mechanical exfoliation allows you to manually remove dead cells from your skin by gently rubbing it with a washcloth, for example.
The scrub consists of a cream, gel or milk that contains small granules. It allows, with the help of a massage on the whole face, to unclog dead cells. Choose a gentle exfoliant with fine particles that will penetrate each of the pores to be cleaned with the circular movements of your fingers. It is suitable for people who want a complete beauty care routine, a more radiant complexion and tighter pores. Sensitive skin, abstain!
Microdermabrasion aims to “sandblast” the skin using abrasive microparticles (aluminum oxide microcrystals, sodium bicarbonate crystals, etc.). It is suitable for people whose skin is dull and rough and who are looking for an instant boost.
Did you know ?
The terms scrub and exfoliation are synonyms. They refer to the same care.
When to exfoliate your face?
Is your skin sensitive? You can gently exfoliate it once or twice a week. Ideally, use a warm, damp washcloth or a mild chemical exfoliant with a low percentage of active ingredients.
Is your skin oily? You can exfoliate your face up to 5 times a week. Oily skin is generally more tolerant. Combine a washcloth facial massage in the morning with a scrub or exfoliating serum in the evening.
Do you have normal or combination skin? You have the choice ! You can opt for a chemical or mechanical method up to 3 times a week.
Absolutely avoid!
If you suffer from cystic or chronic acne, lesions, infections or sunburn, your skin is already inflamed! Exfoliation could cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). This is characterized by the appearance of dark spots on the skin. These marks, which are more common in people with dark complexions, can persist.
How To Exfoliate Your Face ?
For mechanical exfoliation:
- Grab a washcloth or scrub of your choice. Apply a small amount of product to your clean, damp face.
- Gently massage your skin with your fingertips in small circular movements, from the inside out. Avoid the eye area!
- Rinse your face gently with lukewarm water. Pat it dry with a clean towel.
- Finish it off by applying your moisturizer.
Tips and tricks
- Opt for exfoliation in the evening. Your epidermis repairs and regenerates while you sleep. If you tend to blush easily, no worries! Your skin will return to its normal color before you get up!
- Hydrate your skin after the exfoliation. Well-oxygenated skin is more receptive to care. Take the opportunity to nourish your epidermis with a maximum of moisturizing agents and beneficial ingredients (anti-aging care, plumping, etc.).
- Protect your skin from the sun. Exfoliation can weaken your skin and make it more vulnerable to UV rays. Apply sunscreen daily with an SPF of 30 or higher.
