Why Use A Conditioner?
Why use a conditioner?
Here is a cosmetic product that seems so essential for some, and so secondary for others. Called a conditioner, it has a place in a hair routine. But what are its real functions? Is it only recommended, or really required, depending on the type of hair you have? Why use a conditioner? And how does it affect our hair? Conditioner, superfluous or essential care product… It’s up to you, after reading this article!
The functions of the conditioner
Its primary qualities are as follows: detangling of hair lengths, and hydration of hair fibers. Indeed, the formula of the conditioner serves to make the hair smoother and more slippery, by providing it with a protective sheath, thus avoiding stubborn knots when brushing. Does this product limit breakage? ! In addition, it has an indirect but far from trivial action: it protects your scalp. Because, who says easy detangling, says no traction on our scalp. And the latter will owe you? !
But that’s not all ! The conditioner also has a function that is more a matter of “chemistry”. Indeed, its pH is generally acidic (= it tightens the scales of the hair, to smooth it), making it possible to restore the pH of the hair around a neutral pH, even slightly acidic (a sign of healthy hair?! ). Indeed, after using a shampoo with a very often basic pH (= it opens the scales, to be able to properly clean the hair fiber), the pH of the hair needs to be rebalanced. Using a conditioner is therefore good for normalizing the very essence of your hair, and thus keeping it in top shape?.
Then, it is an “express” treatment, which has a short exposure time and is rinsed out (most of the time). It is therefore a surface treatment, unlike the hair mask which penetrates deep into the hair fibers.
Finally, it can have other properties, and there are some for each type of hair: shine for the dullest, restructuring for the most damaged, volumizing for the most flattened… Only oily hair will not necessarily need a conditioner. Otherwise, each of your hair types (dry hair, colored hair, hair with oily roots and dry ends, etc.) will benefit from it, by opting for a dedicated conditioner.
What place does it have in a hair care routine?
It is the ideal companion for your shampoo. Moreover, as its name suggests, the conditioner is used after your cleansing treatment, as a conditioner. Clearly, it helps to maintain and protect your hair. And this, in the same way as an organic moisturizer applied daily after the step of the organic face cleanser, during your face beauty routine! Yes, except that you will not use your conditioner every day, because it could weigh your hair down. But, in the idea, you will use it after your shampoo, within the limit of 1 to 2 times a week.
How is it used?
For the rinse-out conditioner, here’s how to get the most out of its benefits:
- On clean, towel-dried hair, apply a dab (for medium/fine hair) or a dab (for long/very thick hair) of product to your lengths and ends. In short, you must apply enough to cover each hair fiber, but without overdosing. So start at least 4-5 cm from the roots. They do not need it, because the sebum is enough for them (so there is no great point in using a conditioner if you have very short hair). Unless your conditioner is specific to calm an irritated scalp, for example?.
- The exposure time varies a little depending on the product, but remains short (between 2 and 5 minutes). Take advantage of this break to soap your body, or pamper yourself with an organic scrub!
- Before rinsing out your conditioner, detangle your hair with a wide tooth comb. Magic, does it slide on its own? !
- Then, rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. There must be nothing left of the product, so as not to suffocate or grease your hair. The useful technique to know if you have done the job correctly? Feel your fingers squealing in your hair, is it a sign that it is very clean?. Finish by rinsing with cold water, to tighten the hair scales, and give them more shine.
Also, there are conditioners that apply after shampooing on damp hair, but which do not rinse out (balm, cream, mist, etc.). They can facilitate the detangling, and have a protective effect as well. But choose it well according to your hair type, by adapting the texture (more or less rich care)?.
And the composition of a good conditioner, in all this?
Well, favor a natural composition, of course! Then, this product generally contains a small amount of washing agents (which allows easier rinsing), associated with oily and aqueous ingredients (vegetable oils, butters, plant extracts, vitamins, etc.). These active ingredients bring softness and suppleness to your hair.
