Golden Hour Body Care: The Summer Body Care Routine That Actually Works

We spent the last two days on the face — day four is about everything below it. My summer golden hour body care routine is built around one idea: if summer means more skin is visible, it deserves the same attention we give our faces.

Golden Hour Body Care: Head to Toe

Nobody talks about body care with the same detail we give skincare, and that always felt backwards to me. Here’s the full summer body care routine I’ve been using this season, from exfoliation through the small finishing touches.

Step 1: Exfoliation

Two to three times a week, always before any self-tanner or SPF application, never right before direct sun exposure.

  • A simple sugar or salt scrub in the shower is all you need
  • Focus on elbows, knees, and heels, where skin builds up fastest
  • Skip exfoliation the day of any tanning application

Step 2: Hydration That Makes a Tan Last

Hydration is the real secret to a tan that fades evenly instead of patchy.

  • A daily lotion with a little reflective shimmer keeps everything looking fresh
  • Apply straight out of the shower while skin is still damp
  • Reapply to particularly dry areas — knees, elbows, ankles — a second time if needed

Step 3: Hands and Feet

Sandals mean feet are on constant display, so this made the cut into my routine for the first time this summer.

  • Weekly foot mask
  • Regular cuticle oil for hands
  • A quick buff of heels before any sandal-heavy day

Pro Tip: Apply body lotion in downward strokes, following the direction of hair growth. It sounds minor, but it noticeably reduces the chance of irritation on freshly exfoliated or shaved skin.

FAQ: Summer Body Care

Q: How do I keep self-tanner from fading unevenly? A: Moisturize daily with a non-oil-based lotion, since oil can break down tanner faster and unevenly.

Q: What’s the biggest mistake in a body care routine? A: Treating it as optional. It’s the same skin as your face, just with less daily attention — and it shows.

Q: Do I need different products for hands and feet than the rest of my body? A: Not necessarily different products, just more frequent, targeted attention — cuticle oil and foot masks address wear those areas get that the rest of the body doesn’t.

Final Thoughts

I used to think body care was optional, something for “someday.” This summer I gave it the same five minutes I give my face every morning, and it’s genuinely made me feel more put-together than any new outfit has.
