Golden Hour Hair Care: The Summer Hair Care Routine to Protect Against Sun and Salt

Day five, and we’re finishing the beauty stretch of the series with the part of summer that quietly does the most damage: hair. My summer hair care routine is built to protect against everything the season throws at it — sun, salt, chlorine, and heat.
Golden Hour Hair Care: Protection First
Between sun exposure, pool days, and ocean trips, this is the season hair needs the most protection and gets the least. Here’s the full summer hair care routine I’ve been using to fight back.
Daily Protection
A leave-in with UV protection goes on every single morning now — the same way SPF is for skin, hair needs its own daily shield.
- Apply to damp hair before any heat or air-drying
- Focus on the mid-lengths and ends, where sun damage shows first
- Reapply if you’re spending a full day outside
Before Swimming
Saturate hair with conditioner before any pool or ocean day. A damp, coated strand absorbs far less chlorine and salt than dry hair does.
- Braid or tie hair up before swimming to minimize tangling and damage
- Rinse with fresh water immediately after, even if a real shower isn’t possible until later
- Follow up with a proper wash and conditioner as soon as you can
Weekly Repair
One deep conditioning mask a week is doing more for my ends than any other single change this year.
- Leave it on while doing the rest of your routine so it never feels like an extra step
- Focus product from mid-length to ends, avoiding the scalp
- Rinse with cooler water to help seal the hair cuticle
Pro Tip: Cut back on heat styling as much as possible this season. Between the sun already adding natural texture and the sheer heat of summer, this is the easiest season of the year to give hot tools a real break.
FAQ: Summer Hair Care
Q: Does hair really need its own “SPF”? A: Yes — UV exposure breaks down hair protein the same way it affects skin, leading to dryness and fading color over time.
Q: What’s the fastest fix for chlorine-damaged hair? A: A weekly deep conditioning mask paired with a pre-swim conditioner barrier is the combination that’s made the biggest difference for me.
Q: Is it better to air-dry or blow-dry in summer? A: Air-drying when possible reduces overall heat exposure, but a cool-shot setting on a blow dryer is a fine middle ground on humid days.
Final Thoughts
My hair took the worst damage of any part of my routine last summer, so this year’s version is really a repair project as much as a maintenance one — and it’s already showing.
